“Can I really be my own boss?” I remember how hard it was to make the move. I resisted for a while before I actually gave in. As a matter of fact, my husband did the same when it came time for him to make the move. Leaving a steady and reliable income, health insurance, benefits, etc. for the unknown is scary! It’s even scarier when you have little ones to think about. The decision to become my own boss didn’t come easy, but it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made; except of course marrying my husband – because of that I have my beautiful family. 😉
Have you ever wondered whether you are ready to become your own boss? I’ve listed a few things that indicated to me that I was ready. Maybe they’ll strike a chord with you as well.
How do you know you’re ready to be your own boss?
You’ve reached the top of the ladder
Or as in my case, there never was a ladder. In the job I had, there was no opportunities for advancement. It was what it was. To be quite honest, there wasn’t even much room for financial growth because the state had to approve any raises and at the time there was a pay freeze. I thrive when I have goals and sometimes those goals are measured by making it to the next level. Raises, promotions, accolades, etc., those are measurable goals that my position was never going to have.
If you’re in a position where you’ve done all you can do and there’s no where else to go, then it may be time for a change. Of course, this is not always the case, but coupled together with other reasons, this is a big indicator that you’re ready for a change!
You have no drive
To say that I was bored in my position is an understatement. I loved the people I worked with, but if it weren’t for the relationships I had built, I wouldn’t have lasted as long as I did. Sometimes we take the safe job, the convenient job, or even the necessary job. When I applied for my job I was turning 26 and 3 months pregnant. At that time, I was still on my parents’ health insurance, but that was to end on my 26th birthday. So, that meant I was going to lose my insurance before the baby was born! I needed a job with great benefits and I needed it quick! I was blessed with my job and I truly believe that had it not been for that job, I wouldn’t have the skills or the confidence to venture out on my own. I’m a true believer that everything happens for a reason. The time came where I was no longer feeling challenged or inspired in my job. I had learned all I was going to learn and was ready to apply it on the outside.
Life is made up of different seasons. I was in a new season and what was once necessary for me, i.e., insurance, no longer was. It was time for me to reevaluate my situation and make the changes to fit my current season; motherhood. Make sure you reevaluate your situation when necessary. Don’t become complacent and stay at a job just because at one time, it fit your season.
You find that There are more important things in life
For me, that was my family. This feeling of being stagnant in my job and having no drive meant nothing until I had my son. It wasn’t until I became a mother that it became crystal clear to me that there are more important things than career advancement, financial gains, and material things. I guess I always knew that, but Noah made it so that I finally felt like I had to do something about it. Noah became my motivation, my drive, my biggest goal. I wanted to be the best mother I could be and I wanted to spend all of my time with him! Becoming my own boss meant that I would be able to plan my work around him and not him around my work. I wasn’t happy in my job and I didn’t want that unhappiness to transfer into other areas of my life. I wanted to be challenged and I wanted to use my law degree. But more than anything I wanted to be a mother! How amazing is it that I now found a way to make both of those happen! I am fulfilled as a mother and as a career woman!
Make a list of your priorities and see if your job allows you to prioritize in the order and fashion you would like. If not, then make a change.
If you have experienced any of the above, then it may be time for you to start putting a plan in motion! There’s nothing better than the feeling of being in complete control of your life! You may want to check out my post to see some things you should think about and prepare for before you dive in!
